CROSS COUNTRY: PCHS boys win Regional; Lady Panthers, Lady Indians also advance
Pinckneyville took home a Regional championship at Saturday's IHSA Cross Country Regional at Chester as the PCHS boys edged Nashville on a tie-breaker to claim first place.
The Panthers' sixth-best runner, Hayden Carter, came in 32nd place, three spots better than Nashville's number six, Landon Davis, giving Pinckneyville the Regional trophy.
Cale Jausel was the highest individual finisher for the PCHS boys, coming in 4th. Grant Batteau (7th), Garrett Johnson (10th), Caleb Logan (24th) and Dustin Bartnicki (25th) were the rest of Pinckneyville's top five boys.
Du Quoin's boys finished 11th as a team with Caleb Davis crossing the line first for the Indians in 33rd place.
Carterville's Harrison Thomas was the overall individual winner in the boys race.
Both the Lady Panthers and Lady Indians will be moving on to the Sectional as well. Du Quoin placed 2nd in the girls race, and Pinckneyville was 4th.
Andrea Lopez was 8th to lead DHS, followed by Quinn Kirkpatrick (11th), Kate Smith (20th), Chloe Hill (22nd) and Hope Stewart (39th).
The Lady Panthers were led by second-place overall individual Sophie Keith. Savannah Cheek (17th), Lindsey Taylor (28th), Hannah Porter (30th) and Taylor Smith (41st) were also in PCHS's top five girls.
Carterville topped the girls team rankings with three runners inside the top ten. Red Bud's Keri Burmester was first to finish.
The Panthers, Lady Panthers and Lady Indians will all compete again Saturday, October 31 at the Edwardsville (Metro-East Lutheran) Sectional.
