CROSS COUNTRY: DHS, PCHS girls place top-5 at Benton Invite

Du Quoin and Pinckneyville finished 4th and 5th respectively out of 13 teams entered in the Benton Invitational girls cross country meet on Monday, and Lady Panther Sophie Keith placed 3rd overall in the race as an individual.

Herrin took first place in the girls' race, followed by Carterville and Okawville.

The Lady Indians were led by Andrea Lopez, who came in 18th with a time of 20:50. She, along with Quinn Kirkpatrick (23rd) and Kate Smith (38th), earned a medal for placing inside the top 40 individual runners. Olivia Cravens (44th) and Chloe Hill (55th) completed Du Quoin's top five.

Keith, who ran the race in 19:20, was joined by Savannah Cheek (28th) in the top 40 for PCHS. Lindsey Taylor (48th), Hannah Porter (50th) and Taylor Smith (58th) helped complete Pinckneyville's team score.

Two other Indians also earned medals on Monday - Jordan Kirkpatrick (18:39) in the boys' race, and Tarynn Mays in the open race.

Both Pinckneyville and Du Quoin's boys and girls teams will be at Saturday's IHSA Class A Regional in Chester.
