American Legion: Post 167 kicks off summer with pair of wins

The Harrisburg Sons Of American Legion baseball team started its summer off on the right foot with a pair of wins Sunday at home.

Post 167 beat Madisonville, Ky. Post 6 10-7 in Game 1 and that followed that up with an 11-1 win over Sikeston, Mo. Post 114 at Jay Thompson Field.

In the win over Madisonville, Post 167 pounded out eight hits and held Post 6 to just four hits.

Chance Moscardelli (1-0) picked up the win, giving head coach Cody Hall and company six strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out nine and walking three.

Sam Endres came on in relief and allowed four runs (one earned), while walking three and Galatia's Noah Frailey pitched one inning of relief, allowing one run (unearned) and finished with a pair of walks.

At the plate, Braden Burtis went 2-for-4 in the two hole for Harrisburg, scoring two runs, while Gavin Smith, Cam Ande, Luke Miller, Caden VanMeter, Riley King and Brendan Bergan all had one hit.

Bergan drove in a team-high two runs, while Ande Miller, VanMeter and King all had an RBI. Burtis was joined by Smith, Ande and Miller with two runs scored, while Ethan Golish and King scored one run.

In the win over Sikeston, Smith (1-0) went the distance, striking out nine and walking three, while giving up one run on just three hits.

The hit parade continued in Game 2 for Harrisburg as Post 167 racked up 15 hits as Reed Rider led the charge, going 4-for-4 with a triple and a double, scoring three runs and finishing with a pair of RBI.

Ross Rider and Golish each had three hits in the evening game. Ross Rider drove in a team-high three runs, while Golish had two RBI and two runs scored.

Jack Ford went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Blake Stacey, Burtis and Bergan all had one hit. Stacey added an RBI, while Bergan scored a pair of runs and finished with an RBI. Ande and King each scored one run.

Harrisburg's season got underway in a road game Wednesday at Murphsyboro. The game was called in the in the seventh with Post 167 trailing 3-2. The makeup date will be June 17 to complete that contest.

Harrisburg will travel to Carmi Post 224 for a doubleheader Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m. That game will be followed by a road game at Newburg, Indiana Post 44 Thursday at 6 p.m.
