Prep Softball: Bulldogs fall to Mt. Carmel in 2A championship game

A comeback wasn't in the cards for the Harrisburg softball team Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Mt. Carmel in the IHSA Class 2A Regional championship game.

The Bulldogs (21-11) squandered an opportunity in the top of the seventh with two on and no outs, but Kami Pearson had other plans for Mt. Carmel.

The Aces pitcher struck out eight on the day, including two of the next three batters after the Bulldogs put runners on, sending Mt. Carmel to the Carterville sectional.

Harrisburg was held to just four hits on the day as Abby Stacey, Kaylee King, Hallie Boggess and Liza Wiggins each had one hit.

King and Boggess were part of that seventh inning where King had a leadoff single and Boggess followed with a single into center field.

Mt. Carmel scratched across the games first run in the bottom of the second when Emma Banks came through with an RBI single to right field.

In the sixth, the Aces added one more when Hallie Lang had an RBI single.

Kerrigan Payne closed out her career at Harrisburg after giving up two runs on six hits as she struck out three and walked two.
