Something is better than nothing, but Joe Clark knows that it's probably best to keep his fingers crossed.
The Eldorado High School head football coach lost out on his fall season due to the COVID-19 restrictions and thus had it moved to the 2021 "spring" season, which will start in February. In addition, the seven week season -- which starts March 6 and concludes April 16 -- means the loss of two games (Johnston City and Fairfield) for the Eagles.
Clark said all things considered, he's satisfied with the final result.
"I think this is the best we could do," Clark said. "Overall, for the league, I think this is the easiest fix and considering the circumstances and logistical challenges, I'm just excited to have the chance to play at some point. I appreciate how they focused on opportunities."
Three Saturday afternoon games highlight the Eagle schedule, one of those to start the season when EHS makes its final trek to Chester for a 1 p.m. matchup. After this season, Chester moves to the Cahokia conference and will be replaced by Flora.
The next three Friday nights are all home games as Eldorado hosts Vienna-Goreville on March 12, Sesser-Valier on March 19 and Hamilton County on March 26.
The Eagles will play at Carmi on Saturday, April 3 in a 1 p.m. game, followed by another 1 p.m. game on April 10 at home against Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton.
The season finale will be at Edwards County on April 16.
The Black Diamond Conference hasn't determined a time for Friday night games yet, but the outlook appears that games will begin at 6:15 p.m.
In relation to March weather, which Clark admits can be a "tricky month" the EHS head coach likes the idea of multiple Saturday games.
"Hopefully it will be warmer during the day and that's kinda why you see a lot of Saturday playoff games in late fall. We tried to get as many as possible due to the weather and if nothing helps, day games like that always help you in preparation for playoffs games, but even that is TBD."
