Robert A. Barter of Marion

Robert A Barter, age 80, of Marion, Illinois, passed away at 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021 in the VA Community Living Center in Marion.

Robert was born on Oct. 27, 1940 in Saline County to the late Samuel and Juanita Mayfield Barter. He was married to the former Joyce Boatright Mitchell in 1979, and she survives.

Mr. Barter was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from the Army National Guard after 25 years of service. He held a master's degree in soil conservation and worked through the Department of Conservation. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Harrisburg, the Shriners, and the American Legion in Marion.

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his children, Chris Barter, Doug Barter and Betsy Barter; Joyce's children Susan Alford of Marion and Michael Mitchell of Geneva, Illinois; sisters Carla Martin of Galatia, Illinois and Julianne McGowen of Harrisburg; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021 at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Masonic rites will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021, also at Absher-Nicholson. Burial will be held in the North America Cemetery, with military rites.

Memorials should be directed to the VA Community Living Center in his memory.
