Dan A. Bowling of Du Quoin

Dan A. Bowling, 89, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:35 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Dan enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a Korean War veteran. He worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for 30 years as a surveyor, charting sea levels by satellite and stars. He was proud to say he worked in every state in the union as well as Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Jamaica. He retired in 1991.

Dan also worked at the Du Quoin Evening Call, delivering newspapers on a rural route. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 513 in Du Quoin. He was honored to participate in Southern Illinois Honor Flight #6 on Oct. 1, 2019 with his sister-in-law, Linda.

Dan was born May 17, 1931 at Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Dan B. and Berta Marie (Lohman) Bowling.

He married the love of his life, Darlene R. Montroy, on Nov. 20, 1982 at Royalton, Illinois, and she preceded him in death on April 3, 2016.

He is survived by one son, John (Jane) Pennington of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Donna Taylor of Kentucky; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret (Dan) Tilley and Linda (Bill) Whitman, all of Du Quoin; two sisters, Ora (Mixon) Carmichael and Judy, both of Lexington, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; six brothers, Richard, Edward, Dale, Donald, David and John; five sisters, Ouida, Marian, Patricia, Leora and Helen; grandson, Jimmy Pennington; stepdaughter Pamela Glasser; and four sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Graveside services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020 at the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin, with the V.F.W. chaplain officiating.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the U.S. Air Force.

Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan allows up to 50 attendees, using social distancing guidelines. The family asks everyone present to wear masks.

Friends are invited to make memorials in Dan's name to the Southern Illinois Honor Flight or to the donor's choice. These will be accepted at the funeral home.
