Helen J. Monroe of Gallatin County

Helen J. Monroe, age 84, longtime Gallatin County resident, passed on this life peacefully in Ferrell Hospital. Helen was born in Uniontown, Kentucky on Oct. 31, 1935 to the late Walter and Rosetta (Hagan) Darnell.

Helen was first married to Jack Harrelson on Oct. 10, 1950, and he preceded her in death in 2003. She then married Tom Monroe, who survives. Helen was a Christian and a faithful member of the Church of God in Equality. She loved church. Helen also loved to travel, go to yard sales and collect Barbie dolls, which she was very proud of. Her true love, though, was her family; she enjoyed being with them so much. Helen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister and will be missed by many.

Helen is survived by her husband, Tom Monroe of Ridgway; two sons, Larry Harrelson of Equality and David (Patti) Harrelson of Dupo; one daughter, Carla (Byron) Wright of Greenville; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Marlin Darnell of Gary, Indiana; and a sister, Cleona (Jim) Ozee of Omaha. She was preceded by her parents, husband Jack Harrelson, and a sister, Brenda Monroe.

Visitation for Helen will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019 at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway. Her funeral service will begin at noon, on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. David Harrelson, assisted by the Rev. Peggy Winters and Elder Jason Wright. She will be laid to rest in the Cottage Grove Cemetery.
