Constitution Week declared Sept. 17-23 in Harrisburg

Harrisburg Mayor John McPeek has signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week throughout the city. He was joined by the officers and Constitution Week Committee members of the Michael Hillegas Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Constitution Week is held on the same dates every year, regardless of the day of the week that the 17th day of September falls on. The 2022 celebration commemorates the 235th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States.

The first plan of national government the United States had was called Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, quickly shortened to the Articles of Confederation by most people.

The Confederation was a loosely joined group of states that gave only limited powers to the central government. The Articles were drawn up in 1777 and went out of existence when the Constitution was adopted in 1789.
