<b>Harrisburg students make Honors List</b>

Harrisburg students Lincoln Schmitz, a sophomore studying psychology; and McKinley Schmitz, a senior studying management, were named to the Concordia University-Ann Arbor spring Honors List for the 2021-2022 academic year. To be eligible, students must achieve a minimum 3.60 GPA. Concordia University Ann Arbor is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

<b>Lawyer in the Library in Harrisburg Sept. 1</b>

The next session of "Lawyer n the Library" at the Harrisburg District Library, 2 W. Walnut St., will be held 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. Self-represented litigants can sit down with licensed attorneys for a private, one-on-one, 20-minute session. There is no fee, and preregistration is not required. <b>'Insect Day' Aug. 27 is at War Bluff Valley</b>

"Insect Day" will take place Saturday, Aug. 27 at War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, 228 Bushwack Road in Golconda. The event is sponsored by the Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society. The event starts at 3 p.m. with workshops and field trips, an insect zoo, and insect crafts and activities. A potluck dinner is at 6 p.m. The main dish and drinks will be provided, and guests are asked to bring a dish to share. Following the potluck will be a raffle, "Insect Open Mic," and RognboB, playing the gospel of goof and rowdy folk music with a southern Illinois twist. Event is free. <b>Big names coming to legislative summit</b>

A southern Illinois Regional Legislative Summit attended by U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and local legislators will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 25 at American Legion Post 647, at 900 S. Jefferson Ave. in Du Quoin. This is meant to be an informative discussion among federal and Springfield leaders, local elected officials and business leaders. Tickets are $20 and include lunch from the Tipsy Pig. In-person panelists so far are Duckworth, state Sen. Terri Bryant, state Reps. Paul Jacobs and Patrick Windhorst; and representatives of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and southern Illinois congressman Mike Bost will also be available. Sign up at https://business.carbondalechamber.com.

<b>Learning in Retirement offers four fall classes</b>

Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement will offer four classes during its fall term beginning Sept. 12. Beth Lordan will teach "Film from Short Stories," Kay Carr will teach "A Brief History of Colonial America (to 1763)," Dick Matthews will teach "The History of the English Language," and Walter Metz will teach "World Geography and International Cinema." <b>Elks offer children's orthopedic clinic</b>

The South District Elks Lodges in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children's Care Corporation will sponsor a free children's orthopedic assessment clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 at Marshall Browning Hospital, 900 N. Washington St. in Du Quoin. The clinic is by appointment only. Dr. Alan Froehling from Mt. Vernon will be the clinician. For an appointment, call the Illinois Elks Children's Care office at (800) 272-0074. There are no charges for any services at the clinic.

<b>Registration open for SI Made Expo</b>

Registration is now available for interested businesses and employers to sign up to become a vendor for the Southern Illinois Made Expo. The Southern Illinois Made Expo was created to highlight businesses and destinations operating throughout the region. This year's event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16 at the Marion Pavilion. Businesses based in southern Illinois can visit simade.org to learn more. The deadline to register is Sept. 14.
