Woman charged with murder of ex at IDOT worksite in Murphysboro

A Herrin woman faces multiple charges of murder after authorities say she killed her ex-husband, an Illinois Department of Transportation worker, at his work site in Murphysboro last week.

Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced Friday that Alexis N. Stallman, 41, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated domestic battery.

Although Cervantez says Edward Stallman, an IDOT worker, was involved in a crash at a work zone site around 10:49 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, the charges against her allege that she stabbed her ex-husband.

Following the car accident, Edward Stallman was taken to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office secured the scene and continued investigating Stallman's death. The incident turned into a suspected homicide based on Stallman's injuries. Further investigation led law enforcement to Alexis Stallman. Deputies and Murphysboro Police officers discovered that an altercation between the two had occurred just prior to the crash.

Stallman is being held in the Jackson County Jail with bond set at $2 million. A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 9.

If convicted, Stallman faces up to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
