Saturday's #618STRONG parade honors southern Illinois pandemic heroes

Mt. Vernon will play host to the #618STRONG parade at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, to honor southern Illinois heroes of the pandemic. The parade is part of the Mt. Vernon Fall Fest, held Sept. 24 and 25 in downtown Mt. Vernon.

The Crossroads Community Hospital #618STRONG Parade organizers have chosen the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce as the parade grand marshal.

"#618STRONG was going to be our theme for Fall Fest in 2020, but we had to cancel due to the pandemic," said Mt. Vernon Festivals Inc. President Jason Hulbert. "The board and Fall Fest committee decided it was still pertinent this year and fitting to pay tribute to those who have continuously worked hard throughout the last year and a half."

Jamie Storey, executive director for the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce said they are happy to represent the many businesses and industries in southern Illinois who have persevered.

"From the retail workers to the teachers and school staff, and of course the first responders and medical professionals, so many people came together to get us through," Storey said, adding businesses made sure residents have had what they needed despite significant challenges like staffing shortages and supply chain disruptions.

Mt. Vernon Festivals Inc. Director Angela Schrum said the organization is proud to sponsor the #618STRONG Fall Fest and the Crossroads Community Hospital Parade.

"Even more fitting is that it is the 100th anniversary of the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and we get to recognize the role this organization has played in our business community for the last century," Schrum said.
