COVID-19 has claimed the lives of two more area residents, according to the Egyptian Health Department, which covers Saline, Gallatin and White counties.
On Tuesday afternoon, the EHD announced that a resident of Saline County and another in White County had succumbed to complications of the virus.
"We, at Egyptian Health Department, are saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the families," said Holly Frymire, spokesperson for the department.
The department was also notified of an additional 78 residents from southeastern Illinois who have tested positive for the virus.
Nearly half of those reside in Saline County. The ages of the new cases range from toddlers through 90s.
To date, Saline County has had a total of 3,908 lab confirmed positives, including 61 deaths, White County has had a total of 2,579 lab-confirmed positives, including 28 deaths, and Gallatin County has a total of 758 lab-confirmed positives of COVID-19, including four deaths.
The Illinois Department of Public Health, the patients' health care providers, and the individuals have all been notified and are monitoring the situation.
