Sparta VFW Post marks 85 years

On Aug. 28, the Sparta VFW Post #2698 celebrated not only the 85th anniversary of their 1936 charter, but also Legacy Life Member Matthew "Fritz" Mihelcic.

Mihelcic is the 2021/2022 VFW Commander in Chief, who is never without his trusted ally and service dog, Mama Cass.

Guests came for free food and special 1936 priced drinks along with patriotic music for everyone to enjoy. There were five bands playing, and the Black Rifle Coffee Co. served free samples. A grand fireworks display ended the evening's celebrations.

Mihelcic flew in from Washington D.C. to attend the 85th celebration. He has been a member of the VFW for 30 years. "This is a labor of love," he says.

Fritz travels 330 days a year for the National VFW and its programs for service members.

Also attending was Illinois State Commander Bobby Welch. The Post Commander of the Sparta Unit is Ken Hall. The Auxiliary President is Kristy Hall.

Fireworks were provided by Falling Skies Pyrotechnics, owned by Aaron Szczeblewski.
