HARRISBURG -- A team of 10 Harrisburg Scouts BSA members competed over the weekend at a challenge event hosted at Camp Lewallen in Silva, Missouri.

Seven boys and two girls competed in a series of event designed to test Scout knowledge and experience in a variety of areas, which included shotgun shooting, rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, archery, fire making, pioneering, first aid and caber toss.

The event, the Six District Spring Camporee, featured about 250 Boy Scouts from Missouri and Illinois.

Harrisburg Scouts who participated were Wilson DeNeal, Justin Haney, Justin Horn, Jordan Spanel, Chance Lampley, Landyn Bailey and Peyton Daymon from Troop 7023B and Margot Willis and Angelina Carr from Troop 7023G.

While some events, like the shooting sports, were scored based on combined individual results, others had a team-focused approach. In the fire making event, the boys' troop started from scratch gathering tinder and kindling to build a fire big enough to burn through a piece of twine tied two feet above the fire area. The troop finished the challenge in under eight minutes using a single match lit by Jordan Spanel. In the pioneering event, the team used lashings, or rope wrappings, to tie together three large poles used as a framework to safely carry team member Peyton Daymon a predetermined distance for time.
