Harrisburg Fire Department combats blaze on square

HARRISBURG - Harrisburg Fire Department fought a Monday night fire on the southern side of the city's square along Poplar Street.

Fire Department Chief John Gunning said the fire started at about 9:16 p.m. at the location of the former Old 13 bar.

"It was unoccupied commercial space. There was fire damage to the interior, which we kept maintained to the lower level," Gunning said.

He said most of the damage to the structure was smoke and water damage.

Eldorado and Carrier Mills fire departments assisted fighting the fire, and Shawneetown Fire Department assumed command of the Harrisburg Fire Station during the blaze.

Other commercial spaces next door appeared not to be damaged.
