SHAWNEETOWN -- The Shawnee Forest Chapter, NSDAR dedicated the new flag retirement box that is mounted in front of the American Legion in Shawneetown on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020.

The chapter is very thankful to the members of the Shawneetown American Legion for helping to mount the box permanently. The chapter has worked for a year to collect funds to bring this project to fruition. The chapter has two more boxes to mount -- one in Ridgway and one in Eldorado.

The Shawnee Forest DAR is very proud to contribute to the ritual of taking worn flags and disposing of them properly. If anyone has a flag that needs to be disposed of please take advantage of the flag boxes. When the boxes are full, they will be emptied and the flags will be disposed of in a proper flag retirement ceremony.

If anyone is interested in membership in the Shawnee Forest Chapter, National Daughters of the American Revolution, please feel free to contact Regent Lisa Thomas at (618) 841-6248 or Registrar Christy Short at (618) 269-3531. We are always seeking members that are interested in promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism.
