National Night Out in Eldorado set for Aug. 6

ELDORADO - National Night Out, an event to celebrate partnerships and positive connections between community members and law enforcement, will be celebrated from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Mahoney Park in Eldorado.

Free hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided by Star Church, prepared by the Eldorado Men's Club and served by volunteers from area churches at 6:15 p.m. Free children's and family games and snacks will be provided along with fun interactions with local police and fire departments. Free access to the swimming pool and splash pad will be part of the event beginning at 6:30. Prize drawings will conclude the evening.

National Night Out is a 36-year old program organized in conjunction with various police organizations nationwide to inform the public about various police and community programs. Egyptian Health Department's Recovery Oriented System of Care program has teamed up with the city of Eldorado and various volunteers to strengthen bonds between the community and law enforcement, and to build supports for recovery from drug addiction and mental health issues in southern Illinois counties.

"We hope the event will grow locally in coming years, and that other communities and neighborhoods will plan and hold their own events such as neighborhood cookouts and social gatherings," ROSC Program Coordinator Teri Cain said.

Celebrating National Night Out events seemed like a natural fit with the Southeastern Illinois ROSC/SUPRT (Southeastern Illinois Substance Use Prevention, Recovery, and Treatment) Council's desire to build stronger relationships with community members, and support prevention, treatment and recovery from addictions.

A short program to let people know more about the ROSC/SUPRT program and the work to build support for recovery from addictions and behavioral health issues will be held from 6-6:15 at the picnic pavilion at Mahoney Park. Free swimming begins at 6:30 and runs until 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The event will be held at Mahoney Park unless weather is terribly inclement, in which case it will be held at Star Church, 4925 State Route 142 in Eldorado. In the event of questionable weather, a decision will be posted on the Facebook page by 4 p.m. For more information, please call Cain at (618) 273-3326, ext. 2260, or email to tcain@egyptian.org.
