Crossville man killed in tornado

CROSSVILLE – One man is dead after a tornado went through rural Crossville Tuesday night, according to White County Coroner Chris Marsh.

Marsh said Thomas McCord, 71, died after the outbuilding in which he was seeking shelter took a direct hit from the tornado and was destroyed.

"The tornado came through just south of Crossville and hit his home," Marsh said. "His wife was inside the home. It sustained damage and she was injured. She was taken to a hospital, treated and released several hours later.

McCord was reported missing after the tornado passed, Marsh said. Firefighters and White County sheriff's deputies searching at 1529 County Road 1800 North, Crossville – McCord's address – found McCord in a field about 50 to 75 yards from where the outbuilding had been.

Marsh said no other deaths have been reported, but White County has a considerable amount of damage. He praised volunteers who have begun cleanup and have provided support.

"Actually, there is a large number of people downtown who showed up to feed those working in the cleanup area," he said. "It is a really good turnout."
