Police warn of phone scam

Harrisburg Police Chief Bob Smith said Wednesday that a local woman contacted Harrisburg Police about a telephone scam that she encountered recently.

She received a call from a person who said he represented Walmart and was authorized to give her a $100 gift card from the store.

The scammer told her that she needed to give him her credit card number so he could clear up a $3 debt before the gift card could be issued. The woman refused and hung up. She then called the police department.

Chief Smith hopes this information will help people avoid being taken in by the scammers.
