TRACK & FIELD: DHS's Mays, PCHS's Keith make finals at State
Du Quoin's Tarynn Mays and Pinckneyville's Sophie Keith have advanced from the preliminary round of the IHSA State Track & Field meet into the finals after their performances in Charleston on Thursday.
Keith will compete in the finals in the 400 meter dash, where she is yet to lose a race this season. Her time of 1:00.30 was best of her heat. Keith also competed in the 200 meter dash, but failed to advance with a fifth-place showing in heat number two (26.71).
Mays advanced to day two in the triple jump, betting her Du Quoin High School record set at last week's sectional by almost a foot with a distance of 36'4.5. She was third overall amongst all triple jumpers on Thursday. Mays failed to advance in the 100 meter dash, finishing seventh in heat four with a time of 13.24.
Pinckneyville's Lexi Conner was two inches shy of advancing in the high jump, clearing 5'0. The cutoff to advance to the finals was 5'2.
Also competing, but not advancing for Du Quoin were Quinn Kirkpatrick (800 meter run, 2:38.45; 1600 meter run, 5:58.80) and the 4x800 meter relay team (11:19.20) of Andrea Lopez, Kate Smith, Hope Stewart and Olivia Cravens.
Results of the final round will appear in Tuesday's newspaper, as the Du Quoin Evening Call will not publish on Monday, May 25th in honor of Memorial Day.
