Oleva Winterberger
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Oleva Winterberger, born Laura Oleva Wintizer on Oct. 8, 1920, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Sutter Memorial Hospital, Sacramento, Calif., after a short stay.
She is survived by her children, Ona F. Jones, Charles (Marla) Winterberger, Tessa (Greg) Winterberger-Olson and Sybil David McWalters. She was the grandmother of Joel (Michaela) Schafer, Jason Schafer, Laura Winterberger, Tessa McWalters and Matthew McWalters; and great-grandmother of Ona M. Schafer. She is also survived by her dear sister, Sybil Whitlock of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Marjorie (Bob) Barnett of Equality; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was born near Harrisburg to Ben and Tessie Wintizer. She married Charles L. Winterberger on Jan. 1, 1943. They were married for 59 years. Charles preceded her on Oct. 28, 2001.
Oleva, Charles (a pilot and Lt. Colonel) in the Air Force for 21 years) and their children traveled and lived in many places in the United States and also lived in Bedfordshire, England, for three years. Teaching was her passion, especially teaching children to read. Oleva started her career teaching in a one-room school in Illinois. She taught high school in Southern Illinois. After moving to Sacramento, she was a second and third grade elementary teacher at Billy Mitchell School for 23 years. While teaching there, she received her master's degree in education at CSUS in 1965. She has been a member of the El Camino Baptist Church since 1959. Oleva had a sense of humor, wit and love for the family up until the very end. She will be missed as a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved the caregivers at Aegis and called it her home.
Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, and the funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at El Camino Baptist Church, 2805 El Camino Ave., Sacramento, Calif. 95821. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Ministry in care of the El Camino Baptist Church.
