SOFTBALL: Lady Indians slip by Steeleville for sixth straight W
Their offense wasn't all that explosive, but the Lady Indians used pitching and defense to get the job done in a 4-0 win at Steeleville on Wednesday, their sixth victory in a row. Marisa Ferguson continued her strong run in the pitching circle with a two-hit shutout, walking four and fanning ten.
"Ferguson again was great and we played some solid defense behind her," said DHS head softball coach Jason James. "(Mackenzie) Jackson made another diving catch in center saving a run. We didn't hit the ball great but he had some timely hits. I'm proud of the girls on how hard they have been working, they are asking questions and making adjustments."
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third, when Amanda Atteberry reached on an error following base hits by Jordyn Bullar and Marisa Ferguson, bringing a run across for a 1-0 Du Quoin lead.
Another Lady Warriors error put Alaina Caldwell on to lead off the top of the fourth inning, then Sydney Lewis sacrificed her over for Timbra Mansfield to drive her in with an RBI single to make it 2-0 DHS.
Caldwell then knocked in a pair with her single in the fifth, and Ferguson sent down the last seven Steeleville hitters in a row.
Bullar (2-4, 2 R), Ferguson (2-3, 2B, BB), Caldwell (1-3, R, 2 RBI), Lewis (1-2, SAC) and Mansfield (2-3, RBI) had hits for Du Quoin.
The Lady Indians (18-14) travel to Murphysboro on Thursday.
