SOFTBALL: Home runs lift Trico to win over Lady Falcons
Home runs by Brooke Higgerson and Jessica Prange helped lift Trico to a 7-6 home win over Elverado on Wednesday. Prange, Higgerson, an Danyelle Eilers combined to go 7-for-11 with 6 RBIs for the Lady Pioneers.
"We had two big innings," said EHS head softball coach Donette Wheatley, "one a the beginning of he game and one at the end of the game. We couldn't string together any hits in the middle innings and their third basemen made a play on almost everything that came to her."
"They had one big inning but two big hits, the two home runs, and that was the difference in the ball game."
RBI singles by Kaitlin Lively (two-run single) and Maycee Bowlin gave Elverado a 3-1 lead after the top of the second inning, but Trico answered big in the bottom half.
Juhle Prange doubled and scored on Higgerson's two-run homer, but Trico was just getting started. Jessica Prange and Eilers later added to the damage with RBI signels to put the Lady Pioneers ahead 6-3.
Jessica Prange's solo homer to start the bottom of the sixth proved to be a much-needed insurance run for Trico. Two errors and singles by Bowlin, Cheyenne Abbadusky and Paige Newfarmer put the tying run at second base fo Elverado in the seventh, but the comeback attempt fell short when Britani Prescott grounded to third base for the final out.
Abbadusky (1-4, R), Newfarmer (2-4), Lively (1-3, 2 R, 2 RBI), Bowlin (3-3, R, RBI, 2B) and Brooke Whittington (1-3, R, 2B) hit safely for the Lady Falcons.
Prescott took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on a dozen hits and two walks.
Elverado (7-9, 5-0) is at home against Meridian on Monday in Vergennes.
