Vinyard Indian Settlement a step closer to tribal recognition
State Rep. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) passed a bill out of the Illinois House of Representatives recognizing Southern Illinois' Shawnee Indian tribe and making them eligible to receive state and federal resources currently offered to other Native American groups.
"As a resident of Southern Illinois, I am proud to sponsor this legislation because not only does the Shawnee Tribe deserve the recognition and resources allowed to other Native American groups, but it will also lead to more resources for our region," Phelps said.
Under the proposed legislation, the Vineyard Indian Settlement of Shawnee would formally be declared a "tribe" which will make it eligible to receive resources from the federal government as well as certain state agencies. Resources expected with the recognition of the tribe are expected to go toward the creation of an elderly living center, a child day care center and improvements to the surrounding environment. The bill passed the House and now stands for consideration before the Senate.
"Southern Illinois has a rich history and the Shawnee people are part of it," said Phelps. "This bill brings the historical recognition that Southern Illinois deserves as well as vital resources that will help to spur economic development."
Brandon Phelps represents the 118th District in the Illinois General Assembly, which includes all or portions of Alexander, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, and Union counties.
