BASEBALL: Gallatin County sqeaks by Falcons, 3-2

Elverado's Austin Hester pitched well enough to win Monday's home game against Gallatin County, but his offense couldn't generate quite enough run support as the Falcons fell 3-2, snapping their two-game winning streak.

Hester allowed just six hits and three walks and struck out eight, including six of the last eight batters he faced.

"Austin pitched the best I've seen him throw in three years," said EHS head coach Tim Davis. "When he got into trouble, he'd get a double play ball or a strikeout. We just couldn't get the big hit when we needed to."

The Falcons led 2-0 after a two-run homer by Zach Berner in the bottom of the first inning, which also plated Nolan Waller (walk), but Elverado's offense stalled from that point on, stranding their remaining five base runners.

Gallatin County got all three of their runs with two outs in the top of the second inning on three hits and two hit batters. Hester gave up only two hits the rest of the afternoon.

Berner (1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR), Hester (2-3), Alec Valerius (1-3) and Avery Caraker (2-3) had hits for the Falcons.

EHS (3-8) travels to Shawnee on Tuesday.
