Swap meet benefits Gallatin Co. Fair

The Gallatin County Fair is sponsoring a swap meet every second Saturday of the month until October from 7 a.m. until the vendors decide to break down for the day. The first is Saturday, April 11.

Gallatin County Fair and Popcorn Day Secretary/Treasurer Sheila Pittman said the swap meet is another way to support the fair. Vendors will pay $10. There is no limit on space for vending booths.

"They'll just pull in the back side of the barn in a truck with their stuff in it or set up on the ground. We don't measure a spot," Pittman said.

Last year the swap meet was on Sunday, a day many had church or other engagements. She hopes moving it to Saturday improves attendance.

Available items run the gamut. Chickens and rabbits have been sold in the past along with tools, crafts, outgrown clothing, lawn and garden equipment, hunting, fishing and boating supplies or whatever else someone may find valuable.

"People just bring what they want and sell it. They set their own price," Pittman said.

With the swap meet on the second Saturday and auction at 10 a.m. the fourth Saturday, the fairground offers two events per month for finding bargains and recreational shopping.

The auction also involves a mishmash of items, including livestock, poultry, lawn mowers and furniture.

"We just have people bring a little bit of everything for the auction," Pittman said.

With the state cutting funding to county fairs, fair organizers must think creatively to keep fairs operating. The demolition derby and mud races are other fundraisers.

"All the time we are trying to better ourselves and keep money flowing into our account," Pittman said.
