Dry, windy day fuels grass fires in Carthage
Members of the Carthage Fire Department had a busy day, Tuesday, responding to several natural cover fires.
A fire located at 17867 Old 66 Blvd. burned approximately three acres of grass before firefighters were able to put it out.
Carthage Firefighter Terry Ogden said it started out with a homeowner burning some brush and then the wind picked up and it jumped out of control.
Firefighters also responded to a mutual call with the Sarcoxie Fire Department at 6835 Elm Rd. near Reeds. This fire burned around two acres of grass before it was under control.
Ogden said the cause of this fire was the same as the fire on Old 66 Blvd.
"This wind is deceiving," Ogden said. "It feels calm and then suddenly it picks up. People really need to be careful."
