Chicago area on thin ice
The western suburbs, for the most part, were spared the ice storm that hampered travelers and closed numerous schools in the northern area of the state Monday.
However, the National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for Tuesday, which will bring periods of rain or freezing rain throughout the afternoon and a high temperature near 36 degrees.
Today's storm may result in a half-inch of ice and some snow in the western suburbs.
"It'll continue through mid-morning, maybe until the noon hour (on Tuesday)," said Casey Sullivan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "Eventually, temperatures will get up to around freezing. Anyone who doesn't have to travel through the morning rush hour, shouldn't."

As of 6:30 a.m., light freezing rain was reported at O'Hare International Airport, where 250 flights had been canceled and delays were running 15 to 30 minutes. At Midway, 25 flights had been canceled and none were delayed.
Areas south of Interstates 88 and 290 may experience heavy rains Tuesday.
The far west and northwest suburbs were hit the hardest with Tuesday morning's storm.
