20-year sentence for shaking, throwing baby
A Galatia man was sentenced to 20 years incarceration for aggravated battery of a child.
Colten W. Campbell, 21, pled guilty to the charge and Judge Walden Morris sentenced him to 20 years in Illinois Department of Corrections, three years mandatory supervised release and costs, according to a release from Saline County State's Attorney Mike Henshaw.
Aggravated battery of a child which caused permanent disability is a Class X Felony punishable by six to 30 years in IDOC and a $25,000 fine.
Campbell will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence as required by law under the Truth in Sentencing Act.
Illinois State Police led the investigation with help from Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. ISP was notified of a four-month-old baby with a severe head injury. The investigation found the baby to have received severe head injuries from blunt force trauma, along with injuries consistent with being shaken. Investigators learned the baby had been left in Campbell's care and Campbell had shaken the baby and thrown the child onto a bed multiple times causing severe head injuries.
Assistant State's Attorney, Jason A. Olson, led the prosecution.
