Gaming doing well. Even without a Chicago casino, gambling seems to be doing OK in Cook County. The sheriff's office announced last week it busted nearly a dozen taverns in the region for paying cash winnings from video gaming machines, which is illegal. The sheriff confiscated 32 machines and more than $5,000. Within a few years, gamblers may be able to do their business out in the open, if lawmakers finally grant Chicago a controversial land-based casino.
