Obituary: Jerry D. Duane
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Jerry D. Duane, 77, of Gainesville, Va., formerly of Galatia, died suddenly from complications of a tickborne illness, ehrlichiosis. Jerry will be remembered by friends and family for his outgoing personality. He never met a stranger and loved to both tell and hear a good story. He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad. He was active in Vienna Baptist Church, the Lost River Retreat Center and the preservation of the Jeremiah Moore House. He was involved in many other charities and activities including scuba diving and downhill skiing.
Jerry was the beloved husband, friend and companion to Trula E. Pemberton Duane for 55 years. He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Alan Duane. He is survived by Trula, his daughter, Jami Lyn Duane-Brady, son-in-law, David Brady, and grandchildren, Michaela, Nathaniel, Ethan and Miranda. He will also be missed by his three brothers, Sam, Jim and Len Duane and their families, the Nguyen family and many friends scattered across the U.S.A. and throughout the world.
After he graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1955, Jerry had a long and varied career serving the U. S. government. He served two years in the Army, worked for the Navy and earned a master's degree from Indiana University. He served on the Vietnamese Resettlement Committee. He finished his career with 18 years of service in the Energy Department championing the development of alternative energies. Along the way he was awarded numerous recognitions and awards.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2011, at Vienna Baptist Church in Vienna, Va.
