Obituary: Walter Albert Scantlan

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Walter Albert Scantlan of Harrisburg was born to the union of George Albert and Nina Mae (Kitchen) Scantlan on July 31, 1931, in Earlsboro, Okla., and left from this life suddenly on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Herrin Memorial Hospital in Herrin at the age of 79.

Walter was united in marriage to Elva Ruth Lane on May 29, 1954, in Equality and to this union three children were born: Connie Lea, Daniel A. and Carla Jean. Walter and Elva enjoyed 57 years of marriage together.

Walter graduated from Cuba High School in Cuba, Mo., and entered the United States Air Force on Sept. 11, 1951, to serve in the Korean Conflict. He left the military on Sept. 10, 1955, in Del Rio, Texas as a staff sergeant. Walter worked for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis as an assistant foreman until he retired in 1984. They moved to Harrisburg in 1994.

Walter was a member of Berkeley Masonic Lodge No. 667 A.F. and A.M. He also served as a deacon of several churches, including Grandview Baptist Church in Ferguson, Mo., and Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Mitchellsville.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, George and Nina (Kitchen) Scantlan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dan and Ada Lane; sister and her husband, Barbara Scantlan Hana and Lee Hana; brother-in-law, Ervan A. Lane; and a sister-in-law, Lois Burklow.

Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his wife of 57 years Elva Ruth Scantlan of Harrisburg; three children, Connie Lea Scantlan Smith and husband Michael Smith of Harrisburg, Daniel A. Scantlan and wife Lori of St. Charles, Mo. and Carla Jean Scantlan Palazzolo and husband Michael of Champaign; seven grandchildren, Amber Smith, Amy Costello, Jessica Allen, Joseph, Andrea and Michael "Mic" Palazzolo and Wendy McClusky; six great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters; four brothers, Clyde and wife Ellen Scantlan of Sullivan, Mo., Donald and wife Paulette Scantlan of Lake City, Fla., George William and wife Betty Scantlan of Sullivan, Mo., Jerry and wife Bonnie "Sue" Scantlan of Sullivan, Mo.; brothers-in-law, Erman and wife Patricia Lane of Junction, Elvis James and wife Carolyn Lane of Columbia and Wilford Burklow of Greenwood, Ark.; sister-in-law Ruth Lane of Chesterton, Ind.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.

Graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Lick Creek Cemetery, Cuba, Mo., with Pastor Mike Smith and George Scantlan officiating.
