Sheriff's Office outlines Peterson guidelines
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office released the "People v. Drew Peterson Court Operational Plan" on Friday.
The plan is intended to establish rules and guidelines for both media and the public in regard to Tuesday's 10 a.m. preliminary court appearance for Drew Peterson at the Randolph County Courthouse.
"We've been working in conjunction with the Attorney General's office to develop a plan for the large amount of media that usually follows this guy," said Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff during Friday's meeting of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners. "We're weren't hoping to do a lottery for the preliminary hearing, but (the attention) is picking up steam."
Members of the public who wish to attend the hearing must report to the fourth floor of the courthouse by 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday to submit their names to the Sheriff's Office to qualify for a random lottery selection.
At 9 a.m., the Sheriff's Office will conduct a random lottery and notify the selected entrants. All members of the media and general public must enter the main courthouse doors on the northeast side of the building and proceed through security.
"We are required to have some seats available for the prosecution, defense and sketch artists," Wolff said.
No electronics - including cell phones, laptops, cameras or other audio or visual equipment - will be permitted inside the courthouse. Proper attire (no offensive/prejudicial clothing) will be required.
Questions concerning courthouse operations, parking and logistics should be directed to Randolph County Sheriff's Office Public Information Deputy Donnie Krull at DrewPetersonCourt@randolphco.org or 618-826-5484 extension 504.
Peterson, 61, made his initial appearance at the Randolph County Courthouse on Feb. 9 on charges of one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder, both Class X felonies.
The charges are related to an alleged plot to kill Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow, who prosecuted Peterson's murder case. According to the Attorney General's office, Peterson allegedly tried to orchestrate the plot between September 2013 and December 2014.
Peterson is being charged in Randolph County. The solicitation for murder charge carries a penalty of 15 to 30 years, while the solicitation of murder for hire carries a penalty of 20 to 40 years, according to Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
The former Bolingbrook police sergeant is currently serving a 38-year sentence at Menard Correctional Center after being convicted in 2012 for the 2004 murder of his third wife, 40-year-old Kathleen Savio.
He is also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson.
Media attention on the case resumed with a fervor on Wednesday after it became known that Peterson's former attorney, Joel Brodsky, received two letters - dated Jan. 15 and Feb. 16 - from a Stateville Correctional Center inmate, Adrian Gabriel.
The letters alleged a set-up plot by Gabriel and his former cellmate, Antonio Smith - who befriended Peterson during a previous six-month incarceration at Menard.
"We think we put together a pretty good plan (for Tuesday) and we will tweak it as we go," Wolff said.
