Clyde E. Pankey

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Clyde E. Pankey, 89, North Friend Street, Carrier Mills, died 9:57 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.

Graveside services will precede burial 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at the Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Scott Baker officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American legions. There will be no visitation; those planning to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to service time. Arrangements are entrusted to Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills.

He was born June 18, 1921, in Saline County to Earl and Iva (Matthews) Pankey. On Sept. 14, 1941, he married Mary Gibbs, who preceded him in death June 18, 2010.

He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of tech 5, receiving the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal and two overseas service bars.

He was retired as a coal miner from Sahara Coal Company.

He is survived by a daughter, Connie Cain of Carrier Mills; a son, David (Amy) Pankey of Carrier Mills; four grandchildren, Tim Cain, Anthony Cain, Adrienne Rider and Neal Pankey; six great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Carl Pankey; sister, Mabel Gee; and a son-in-law, Dawayne Cain.
