OBITUARY: Benny Jean Weiss

Benny Jean Weiss, age 84 of Harrisburg, passed away at 5:24 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at the Carrier Mills Nursing Home.

Benny was born on Sept. 25, 1930, in Chicago to the late Jean and Mary Lawanda (Simmons) Weiss. On March 31, 1956, he married Shirley Elaine Archer and she survives. Benny worked as a soil scientist and later worked at the Southern 7 Health Department as an inspector. He attended Walnut Grove Baptist Church and attended Pankeyville Baptist Church; as well he was a Navy Veteran.

Surviving family members include his wife: Shirley Weiss of Harrisburg; son: Randy Weiss of Morris; son: Jerry (Becky) Weiss of Harrisburg; four grandchildren: Jason Weiss, Ben Weiss, Brian (Sydni) Weiss, and Matt (Maddie) Weiss; two great-grandchildren: Jaden Sigler and Mason Weiss; brother: Paul (Bonnie) Weiss; sister: Mary June (Gene) Hanson; several nieces and nephews.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Mike Weiss.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at Reed Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Mark Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery south of Harrisburg. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legions and the National Guard. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at Reed Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
