Casey's given go ahead to sell alcohol

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[After a vote Tuesday by Carrier Mills Village Board Casey's General Store will have the opportunity to sell alcohol whether neighbors like it or not.

The board approved changing the village's liquor ordinance to strike a requirement that two-thirds of nearby residents approve the vending of alcohol for businesses within a corridor including U.S. Route 45 and East Walnut Street. Businesses inside the old downtown do not have the meet the two-thirds rule.

Casey's General Store has collected signatures, but not enough to meet the two-thirds requirement.

Trustees Greg Prince and Derek Field voted no on the change to the ordinance.

There was little discussion prior to the vote, except for Mayor Louis Shaw's observation the change was "against my recommendation, however, the board has spoken."

Shaw has said in previous meetings he is opposed to Casey's having a liquor license because additional taxes to the village would be minimal and competition with future new businesses could be significant.
