Everett E. Estes 'EEE'
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Everett E. Estes "EEE," 83, of Harrisburg, passed away at 2:35 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009 at his residence in Harrisburg surrounded by his family.
He was born on Nov. 18, 1925, in West Palm Beach, Fla., to the late Leroy "Roy" and Lillie (Barnett) Estes. On Oct. 30, 1947, he married Kathryn Reynolds and she survives.
Everett graduated from Harrisburg High School and went to work at Evansville, Ind., in a factory making P-47 airplanes. When he was discharged from the military, he was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenters Union.
He was a retired corporal with the Illinois State Police. He started his career in 1955 in District 11 at East St. Louis; he moved to Harrisburg in 1957 and transferred to District 13 out of Du Quoin, until District 19 was formed in the early 1980s. He worked with District 19 until his retirement on April 30, 1982. He also worked for Kerr-McGhee coal mine as a security guard when they first opened, staying there nine years.
Everett was a World War II veteran serving in the Army. He was a tank driver in the 16th Armored Division for General Patton. He was inducted in January 1944 and was discharged in April 1946.
He was a member of the Dorrisville Baptist Church. Everett was a member of the Illinois Police Association Shawnee Division, where he was secretary/treasurer for 20 years, past president and was also formerly on the executive board. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows, the Illinois Troopers Lodge No. 41, the Retired Illinois State Police Association, Harrisburg American Legion and the Ridgway V.F.W. He devoted his life to helping family, extended family and friends.
Surviving family members include his wife, Kathryn Estes of Harrisburg; daughter, Janice Estes of Harrisburg; son, Gary Estes and wife Dana of Harrisburg; daughter, Dena Estes Elam and husband Greg of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Jason Duensing and Megan of Red Bud, Sarah Schatte and husband Daron of New Athens, Nathan Duensing and wife Amanda of Chicago and John Estes of Florence, Ky.; one great-grandchild, Davin Schatte of New Athens; two sisters, Doris Green of Harrisburg and Lenora Elmore of Harrisburg; two brothers, Roy Estes and wife Silvia of Vienna and Robert Estes and wife Jean of Mesa, Ariz. Several nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Millie Voltz; brother, David Estes; and a sister, Emily Estes.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Reed Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Dewayne Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Reed Funeral Chapel. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation.
