SWIMMING: Indians maul Mt. Vernon, win 76 events
Du Quoin absolutely crushed the King City Flippers at Tuesday's swim meet at Mt. Vernon, winning a total of 76 events on their way to a 586-77 team victory on points in their next-to-last regular season meet of the 2014 summer.
The point total and win total are both season highs for the Swimming Indians.
Obviously, there were a lot of impressive performances by individual swimmers, but only one was of the record-setting variety. Olivia Cravens (girls 13-14) improved her team record in winning the 100-meter freestyle to 1:04.09 while also collecting wins in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly.
Ten other Swimming Indians tripled up with three solo event wins on the night - girls Mikah Montgomery (7-8; 50m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly), Meesha Montgomery (9-10; 50m freestyle, 25m butterfly, 100m individual medley), Madilyn McLain (11-12; 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m IM), Haley Kuhnert (15-18; 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m IM) and Quinn Kirkpatrick (15-18; 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly); and boys Henry Harsy (7-8; 25m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 25m backstroke), Jacob Harsy (11-12; 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m IM), Paxton Higgerson (13-14; 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly), Rylan Ragar (13-14; 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m IM) and Jerry Kuhnert (15-18; 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m IM).
Other female swimmers winning for Du Quoin at Mt. Vernon included Mckenzie Eaton (6 & under 25m freestyle), Haylee Crow (6 & under 25m backstroke), Ellee Green (7-8 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke), Makoa Montgomery (9-10 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke), Lauren Heape (9-10 25m breaststroke), Lauren Cravens (11-12 50m freestyle), Amelia McLain (11-12 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke), Rachel Gomes (13-14 50m freestyle) and Madeline Halstead (13-14 50m backstroke, 100m IM).
Male swimmers who also found the winner's circle on Tuesday were Justin Harsy (6 & under 25m freestyle), J.J. Van Zandt (6 & under 25m backstroke), Alec Bellamy (7-8 25m breaststroke), Maddax Thompson (7-8 25m butterfly), Jakob Eaton (9-10 25m breaststroke), Ian Carver (9-10 25m butterfly), David Gomes (11-12 50m backstroke), Jaxon Smith (11-12 50m butterfly), Collin Dorsey (15-18 50m freestyle) and Caleb Gomes (15-18 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke).
