New Braintree furniture store to have job fair

Cardi's Furniture wants to hire 100 people immediately for the store the company is building at Ivory Plaza in Braintree.

The Rhode Island-based company is holding a job fair at the Pearl Street site from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 23.

Spokesman Benjamin DeCastro said those hired following the interviews will go through a monthlong training process. The jobs include those for sales, the business office and delivery.

Plans call for Cardi's to open this summer in the space Expo Design Center vacated in 2005. That building originally opened as a Caldor department store 15 years ago. This will be Cardi's first store in the Boston area.

DeCastro said Cardi's has many customers on the South Shore who have been traveling to the company's stores in Swansea and South Attleboro.

The company promises same-day delivery for in-stock items ordered before 3 p.m.

Founded in 1928 as a general store, Cardi's later expanded into furniture sales. The business is run by a third generation of three Cardi brothers.

Cardi's also has stores in Fall River, South Kingstown, R.I., and West Warwick, R.I.

The 113,000 square feet of space that Cardi's is taking up includes space that a Tweeter store occupied before closing its doors at the end of last month.

Tweeter spokesman Andrew D'Amico said the Canton-based electronics retailer will continue to operate stores in Hanover and Dedham.

The Dedham store on Route 1 has been redesigned to include more products.

'We are making significant changes at the Dedham store," D'Amico said. "Hopefully, it will be a better experience for our customers."

Tweeter has sent out postcards offering a one-time 10 percent discount to customers. The offer expires May 2.

Schultze Asset Management, a Purchase, N.Y., investment company, bought Tweeter's operations for $38 million last year after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company struggled amid declining sales, particularly as shoppers looked to big-box stores for large-screen TVs.
