Turkington announces decision to step down

State Rep. Eric Turkington, D-Falmouth, recently announced to his constituents his decision not to seek re-election.

"At the end of my current term, in January 2009, it will have been my privilege to represent the people of Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, the Elizabeth Islands and Falmouth [and, for a time, Barnstable and Yarmouth] in the state Legislature for 20 years," wrote Turkington in a letter dated Feb. 27.

In the letter, Turkington, who will complete his current term, thanked constituents for their support and called his position as a state representative "the most satisfying and rewarding occupation anyone could ask for."

Turkington's letter also announced a new goal, specifically his decision to become a candidate for Register of Probate in Barnstable County.

That role, wrote Turkington, would offer "the opportunity to use my legal education and experience in a new way, with the goal of helping to provide an easier experience for people who have to bring their family matters to the probate court."

If elected, Turkington would succeed Frederic Claussen, who has served as register since May 1969 but recently announced he would not seek another term in November.
