DA: Wellesley student stabbed ex-boyfriend at MIT
A 20-year-old Wellesley College student was held without bail Tuesday afternoon after allegedly stabbing her ex-boyfriend seven times in an MIT dorm.
Anna Tang, a Wellesley junior, will remain behind bars until at least next week, pending the outcome of a dangerousness hearing Oct. 30.
According to the Middlesex County DA's office, Tang broke into her ex-boyfriend's dorm room at MIT early Tuesday morning and stabbed him seven times while he slept.
The victim, 19, was transported to a Boston hospital for treatment. His name and condition were not released to the public Tuesday afternoon.
"We believe this to be an isolated incident done with specific intent to critically harm the defenseless victim," District Attorney Gerry Leone said in a press release.
According to the DA's office, Cambridge Police responded to a reported stabbing at 500 Memorial Drive - an MIT dorm - at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Police arrived at the scene to find the victim in his room bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds. The victim told police he awoke to find Tang on top of him, stabbing him repeatedly.
Tang was found in the building shortly after police arrived. Police also found Tang's jacket covered with blood, and a black folding "buck" knife in her backpack. She was immediately arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to murder and home invasion. It was unclear exactly how she gained access to the building.
Tang, according to a Harvard Web site, was a summer student at the Surgical Planning Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She is currently completing her bachelor's degree in computer science at Wellesley College and had been working at MIT's Department of Computer Science.
"Our hearts and minds are with all of those affected," said Wellesley College spokesperson Arlie Corday. "The college will be providing support to students, friends and staff here, and our campus police are cooperating fully with the investigation. This is very new to us as well."
