3:10 to YUMA, 3 stars (R) Excellent remake of a 1957 classic Western about an outlaw (Russell Crowe) who finds common ground with the man (Christian Bale) keeping an eye on him.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, 3 ½ stars (PG-13) An ambitious rock musical that gets it right. Director Julie Taymor of Newton creates a phantasmagorical spin through 1960s pop culture via Beatles songs.

ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, 3 stars (R) Brad Pitt plays the young outlaw attempting (unsuccessfully) to outrun the man (Casey Affleck) who'd eventually shoot him dead.

THE COMEBACKS, not reviewed (PG-13) A college football coach (David Koechner) with an abysmal record vows to turn things around by rounding up a gang of ragtag recruits. This movie was not screened for critics, which usually means it's a stinker.

DARJEELING LIMITED, 2 stars (R) The latest exercise in style over substance from Wes Anderson will amuse his cult followers, but probably no one else. With Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman.

EASTERN PROMISES, 3 stars (R) Violent, insightful crime thriller about a midwife who unexpectedly gets involved with Russian mobsters in London. Tantalizingly intense, but it ends too abruptly.

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE, 1 ½ stars (PG-13) Cate Blanchett returns to the role that made her a star. This one is about her middle years, which where filled with treachery and romance.

FEEL THE NOISE, not reviewed (PG-13) An aspiring New York rapper is forced to flee to Puerto Rico where he meets the father he never knew he had.

THE GAME PLAN, 3 stars (PG) Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays a bomb-throwing quarterback in Boston who gets hit with an even bigger bomb: He has a young daughter he never knew about.

GONE BABY GONE, 2 stars (R) Ben Affleck directs this shot-in-Boston crime drama about the hunt for a missing girl. Based on a novel by Boston's Dennis Lehane. With Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris.

HAIRSPRAY, 3 stars (PG) Great performances in this exuberant remake of a Broadway hit. John Travolta plays an overweight mother to a plus-size daughter who realizes her dream to be on a dance show.

THE HEARTBREAK KID, 3 ½ stars (R) The Farrelly brothers and Ben Stiller reunite to re-create the magic of "There's Something About Mary." Stiller plays a man who meets his true love on his honeymoon.

INTO THE WILD, 3 stars (R) Sean Penn directs a true tale about a recent college grad (Emile Hirsch) who chucks everything and sets off to live in the Alaskan wilderness.

THE KINGDOM, 1 star (R) Good intentions backfire with a bloody, but blah story of FBI agents investigating a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia. Cast includes Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner.

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, 3 stars (PG-13) Ryan Gosling hopes to further inflate his career with this offbeat story about a shy man who shacks up with a rather odd companion: a silicone sex doll.

LIVE-IN MAID, not reviewed (Unrated) Affectionate tale of the role reversal between a formerly wealthy Buenos Aires socialite and the maid who has served her for 35 years. English subtitles.

LUST, CAUTION, 2 ½ stars (NC-17) Ang Lee returns to his Chinese roots with a World War II spy thriller set in Shanghai and starring the always terrific Tony Leung.

MICHAEL CLAYTON, 2 ½ stars (R) George Clooney is a "fixer" for a high-powered law firm who suddenly discovers his employers are defending a corporate client that will stop at nothing to squelch a class-action suit.

MR. WOODCOCK, not reviewd (PG-13) Susan Sarandon plays a mother who sets her adult son (Seann William Scott) off on a rant after she hooks up with his tyrannical high school gym teacher (Billy Bob Thornton).

RENDITION, 1 star (R) Reese Witherspoon stars as a mother frantically trying to locate her Egyptian-born husband after he disappears on a flight. Jake Gyllenhaal and Meryl Streep costar.

RESERVATION ROAD, 1 ½ stars (R) Joaquin Phoenix headlines this drama about a grieving father bent on hunting down the hit-and-run driver (Mark Ruffalo) who killed his son. Jennifer Connelly and Mira Sorvino costar.

RESIDENT EVIL, not reviewed (R) Milla Jovovich returns for a third go-round as the kick-butt zombie slayer from the popular video game.

THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING, 1 ½ stars (PG) The time-traveling novel by Newbery Award-winner Susan Cooper gets the big-screen treatment.

SLEUTH, 2 stars (R) The stagey two-hander redone with new dialogue, more malice and Caine playing the role he played against 35 years ago. Still hard to buy.

SYDNEY WHITE, not reviewed (PG-13) Amanda Bynes follows "Hairspray" with a standard-issue teen comedy - part "Animal House," part "Revenge of the Nerds" - as cool geeks try to knock frat-house snobs down to size.

SUPERBAD, 3 stars (R) A sweet and sappy but raunchy comedy about two teenage boys coming of age. Starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Seth Rogen.

THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, 1 star (R) After her husband is killed, Halle Berry finds an outlet for her grief in one of his friends, a drug addict played by hunky Benicio Del Toro.

TIM BURTON'S NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN 3D, not reviewed (PG) This holiday classic takes on an entertaining new dimension as it debuts this holiday season in Disney Digital 3-D.

TYLER PERRY'S WHY DID I GET MARRIED, not reviewed (PG-13) The inexplicably popular Tyler Perry adapts his play for the screen, with Janet Jackson playing his significant other.

WE OWN THE NIGHT, 3 stars (R) Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall lend star power to this crime thriller about the New York City drug trade during the late 1980s.
