BASEBALL: Du Quoin Jr. Legion third at Steeleville

Du Quoin's Junior American Legion baseball squad finished the Steeleville Wooden Bat Tournament in third place on Sunday, despite a pair of disappointing losses to Orient and Murphysboro on the event's final day.

A pair of errors led to trouble in the bottom of the first inning against Murphysboro, as Post 127 raced out to a 5-0 lead against Du Quoin starter Dalton Day.

Post 647 trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the top of the third, taking advantage of two walks and an error by Murphysboro, but couldn't keep Post 127 from tacking on five in the bottom half on their way to a 10-3 decision.

Du Quoin finished the game with only three hits - one apiece from Hank Stewart (1-4), Braden Lee (1-3, HBP) and Jordan Edwards (1-4).

Against Orient, Post 647 again fell into an early 5-0 hole as the Miners used a couple hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch to produce some offense.

Orient added five more in the bottom of the third before Du Quoin picked up their lone run in the top of the fourth when Lee led off with a double and Clayton Funk (1-2) added a single. Lee was 2-for-3 in the game.

Day (1-2) and Bryce Clarry (1-2) also had hits in the five-inning loss.

Du Quoin (1-3) will play their home opener on Wednesday, June 4 against Murphysboro in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m.
