State makes emergency repairs to Maplewood Avenue bridge

The overpass above Maplewood Avenue on the Route 128 extension in Gloucester experienced a collapse in concrete Wednesday night. Concrete chunks fell from the overpass to the city street below, forcing officials to close one of Maplewood Avenue's two lanes. No one was injured.

Because 128 is a state-owned road, so the repair process was MassHighway's responsibility.

"MassHighway came out and worked around the clock to stabilize the situation," said Mayor John Bell.

After working through Wednesday evening an into the early morning hours, the road was open for Thursday morning commuters.

"They came out, chopped it all out and fixed it up immediately. They did a real nice job," said City Council President James Destino.
