Red Sox 1967: Ted Williams managing debut not a hit

Hall of Fame hitter, decorated fighter pilot, world-renowned fly fisherman. Ted Williams mastered more than one craft during his lifetime. But the managing thing was never his strong suit.

In his first crack at it, with Washington in 1969, Williams seemed like a natural, guiding the Senators to an 86-76 mark - a 21-game improvement from the mess he had inherited from Jim Lemon the previous season. But it went downhill fast. The Senators were 70-92 in 1970 and 63-96 in 1971, their last year in the nation's capital. Shedding their Washington skin, they became the Texas Rangers in 1972.
