Cubs try to make due without Soriano

Alfonso Soriano has a 1-centimeter tear in the middle of his right quadriceps, and while surgery won't be required, the Cubs' star left fielder is expected to be out for at least a month.

Manager Lou Piniella is crossing his fingers in hopes Soriano can return by Labor Day (Sept. 3), but the Cubs won't have a clearer timetable for two weeks.
