Red Sox 1967: Black BoSox led the way

Let's be honest here. For the first 60-plus years they were in business, it was the baseball team in Boston, not the one in Chicago, that should have been called the White Sox.

The Red Sox had Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, Tris Speaker and Jimmie Foxx, Cy Young and Lefty Grove. But they had no African-American stars. Or scrubs, for that matter. In the beginning, that was society's fault. After awhile, the blame transferred to the team. When the major leagues began to finally dismantle official barriers, the Red Sox shamefully buttressed their own for more than a decade.
