OBITUARY: Glen H. Winter
Glen H. Winter, age 85 of Harrisburg, passed away at 5:35 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
Glen was born on July 20, 1928, in Carmi to the late Paul and Cleanthia Ellen (Myers) Winter. He married Ann Spence on April 17, 1954, and she survives. After moving to Harrisburg, he and son Paul farmed together until retiring Feb. 19, 2006. Previously in Carmi he lived with brother Norman and Mary Winter and farmed with him. His joy was driving the Caterpillar and International tractors. Glen was member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Brownsville. Glen was a Specialist First Class in firefighting when he lived in Memphis, Tenn., where he also worked in transportation.
Glen was a United States Navy Veteran. He entered service on Jan. 23, 1946, at Great Lakes and was discharged on Nov. 21, 1947, in Memphis, Tenn. He was a Seaman Second Class and he received a Victory Medal and an Honorable Discharge Button.
Glen is survived by his wife, Ann of Harrisburg; son, Paul Winter and wife Brenda of Harrisburg; granddaughter, Trista Palmer and husband Jacob of Harrisburg; great-grandson, Rylan; great-granddaughter, Addyson; granddaughter, Tracey Winter and fiancée Matt Hornsby of Carrollton, Ga.; many nieces and nephews of Carmi, Raleigh, Burnt Prairie, Evansville and Oklahoma.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norman Winter; and sisters, Emily Savage and Lois Anderson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Wayne Vaupel will officiate and burial will follow in Big Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Memorials may be made to the Saline County Stockman's Association and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
