OBITUARY: Velma Furlong

Velma Furlong, age 92 of Harrisburg, passed away at 11:54 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Carrier Mills Nursing Home.

She was born on July 1, 1922, in Saline County to the late Pleas and Margie (Layman) Furlong. Velma never married. She lived on state Route 13 west of Harrisburg all of her life except for the last four years, after breaking her hip, she moved to the Carrier Mills Rehab and Nursing Home. She worked for Dr. A.J. Buttner, O.L. Turner and Lloyd L. Parker Furniture and their families. She attended Land St. Church of God for many years and later attended Apostolic Church on Lincoln and Jackson streets.

Surviving family members include brothers: Pleas and wife Oneda Furlong, Lowell and wife Linda Furlong; brother-in-law: Otis Threet; several nephews, nieces; great-nieces and great-nephews; cousin; and special friends: Ed and Betty Towel and families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Bobby, Bill, Luke, Hubert; and sister: Mary Threet; nieces: Janet Furlong and Belinda (Furlong) Keith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Reed Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Hutson and the Rev. G.E. Coultas officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reed Funeral Chapel. The family would prefer flowers be omitted and memorials be made in the form of donations to Carrier Mills Nursing Home Activity Fund or Bankston Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
